Samuel Meisel & Co, the commercial ships supply division of Carisam, traces its roots to the beginning of the 20th century. In Baltimore, brothers Abe & Sam Meisel started a business of selling 'slop chests' of work clothes and toiletries to ships' crews. In the 1920's tax free cigarettes were added and later tax and duty free liquor and fragrances were offered.
From these humble beginnings, Samuel Meisel & Co. has grown to be the largest bonded stores supplier to commercial ships on the eastern seaboard of the United States. In 1989 Samuel Meisel & Co. purchased Philadelphia based Lipschutz Bros, Inc., established by brothers Eddie and Sam Lipschutz in 1905.
In 2001, Samuel Meisel & Co was merged with Miami-based Carisam when both were acquired by the Motta Group. The combined company, Cariam-Samuel Meisel & Co. is an industry leader in the supply of tax and duty free tobacco, wine and spirits to diplomats, cruise ships and commercial ships, allowing us to offer an unprecedented array of duty free products at the most competitive prices.
The commercial ships division has daily service to the ports of New York, Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore, and supplies Norfolk on an 'as needed' basis.
